There are many “Roadblocks” to cash that are put up when one gets a construction job. These roadblocks can occur at any time from the initial bid all the way through project completion. If we were to sum up all these roadblocks in a few words we would say that some form of communication is the root of all failures on a construction job, and usually this lack of communication will lead to poor planning, and future cash losses on a project.

Handoff Process

Have you ever started a new project and had the sensation that everything was spiraling out of control or things were moving very fast, that you could not catch up with a specified schedule or construction processes of a major project? This could be the result of poor project start-up preparation, specifically a poor “hand-off process” between an estimator and another individual, such as a foreman or a project manager who will run a project. The construction industry is an industry that requires and demands fast action to complete the work. In trying to please our clients by showing that we can respond to their needs, we often overlook the time it takes to prepare for a new project. Would you ever play an athletic contest without some type of preparation or formal gathering to determine a “game plan”? If not, then you should never enter into the “game of construction” without a solid plan of attack. An organized official hand-off meeting between and estimator and the project manager and or project foreman will pay dividends later as the project progresses.

Daily Job Log

This document is an outstanding tool to thoroughly report on a given project. This daily report will identify the individual job, who worked on the project that given day, and the particular cost code used to track labor costs. It has areas where a project Superintendent or job foreman can fill in weather conditions, list any special visitors to the job site, the materials used for the day, and deliveries made to the site. If a more detailed work report is needed, there is an area to describe in more detail the work performed that day. On the backside or second page, it has space where one can report on extra work, back charges and any delay issues. This form is available in excel format, and is ready to be used!
